Dear [Salutation]

Welcome to Newswire, our regular update to keep you informed about the latest news, events, campaigns and stories from The Trussell Trust

News round up:
  • In Bulgaria we have offered a place in the House of Joshua to a young state school leaver called Didi. Didi has no relatives but has been offered a home by an 'aunt' in Italy - often a cover for exploitation by sex traffikers - we are so pleased to give her a better alternative.
  • LA Fitness in Salisbury are running a Duck Race in aid of the Trust on Friday 19 June. To participate meet at The Maltings at 11.30am.
  • UK foodbanks featured in 'The Tablet' this week, Radio 1 visited Salisbury foodbank on Tuesday and foodbanks featured in the Baptist Times last week too
  • We have an urgent need for supplies at the Salisbury foodbank. Help here

 Support vulnerable children at Lipnitza

Out of the 80 children who attend Lipnitza Orphanage-School in Bulgaria, 60 are especially vulnerable: These children either have no home at all or their families are so poor and dysfunctional that it is dangerous for the children to return home in the holidays. In some cases their parents use children as a source of revenue through prostitution or sex trafficking.

So what happens to these children in the school holidays? Can we leave them to live on the streets or to go back into dangerous family situations?

The Trussell Trust is setting up a fund to enable Mr Petkov, Director of Lipnitza, to look after these especially vulnerable children during the holidays. In the last two weeks of August, The Trussell Trust leads a team of sixth formers and university students to take 39 children from Lipnitza on a Summer Holiday Camp to the Black Sea for ten days, but for much of the rest of the holiday period many of them will be roaming the streets. We urgently need to provide safe lodgings for these children during the holidays

It costs £45 per month to keep a child safe during the holiday period. Any amount you are able to send us will help transform a child's life.

No food, no home.. Salisbury foodbank helps out

Last week a young man called John* came into the Salisbury foodbank cafe. He was in a desperate state. He was homeless and  the blankets that he slept on, the only comfort left in his life, had been stolen.

Whilst John was at the foodbank centre, George and Jill, a couple who had been homeless, without food and living in a tent, dropped in to thank the foodbank volunteers for giving them food, helping them find a home and helping them get back on their feet.

George started to chat to John and immediately offered him the tent which they no longer needed, and some vouchers for the showers at a campsite. One of our volunteers was so moved that she bought John a stove. We gave him some blankets and personal items and a food parcel. This kindness gave John a temporary home and enabled him to establish contact with his relatives. He now has a more permanent home and a chance to rebuild his life.

Salisbury foodbank manager, Mark Ward, writes:

'Foodbanks are about much more than feeding people, they are places where, every day, hundreds of people around the country find kindness, help, friends and good advice at their point of great need.'

A regular standing order of £25 a month, or whatever you can spare, will enable us to help more desperate people around the country.

You saved my life! A young mother's story

Two weeks ago a very distressed young mother visited the Trust. Over a cup of coffee, Chrissy McAuley, ReStore Shop Manager, listened to her apalling story of abuse and fear. This girl had lost all hope and was on the verge of committing suicide. The next day she phoned to say that her talk with Chrissy had 'saved my life.'

I
It's amazing what a difference a cup of coffee can make...

 What do we do?

In the UK our foodbank network is  feeding thousands of people in  crisis who find themselves unable  to put food on the table

In Salisbury we run community  projects including work  opportunities for  people with  mental health, social and physical  difficulties, and the long term  unemployed

In Bulgaria, the poorest and most  deprived country in the EU, we are  keeping children off the streets,  saving young men and women from  drugs, prostitution and even from  being sold as slaves to sex traffickers
